What actually moves the price
The levers below are in rough order of how much they change the total. Most quote-to-quote differences come from the first two.
Bridal design density
Simple full hands is three hours. Intricate work with portraits, a jaali border and the story of the couple worked into the palms is six or seven, and it is priced by the hour of skill it takes. Decide the design before you take the quote.
How many artists for the guests
One artist manages roughly six to eight guests an hour on simple designs. A hundred guests therefore needs three or four artists, not one — and each additional artist is commonly ₹2,000–₹5,000 for the function. Getting this number wrong is what makes a mehendi run past midnight.
Organic versus chemical cones
Chemical cones stain faster and darker and occasionally cause a reaction — on the bride, on her hands, two days before the wedding. Organic cones cost a little more and need applying earlier for the colour to come. It is worth paying for and worth asking about explicitly.
Bridal, or bridal plus the family
The mother, sisters and bhabhis usually want half-hand or full-hand designs, which is a separate rate again — ₹300–₹1,500 a head depending on the work. Count them into the booking rather than negotiating on the night.
Home service and travel
Most mehendi happens at home rather than at a venue, and out-of-city travel or a very early start is chargeable. Where the function runs long, ask what an extra hour costs before it becomes an extra three.
The date, and the drying time
Mehendi must go on the evening before or two evenings before for the colour to develop, which pins the artist to a fixed date they cannot double-book. Peak-season dates are gone months ahead for the same reason.
